Hello dear readers,

Today, we starting a new series about medicinal plants for your medicinal garden on Mondays.
Today is for Cassia fistula, commonly known as the Golden Shower tree. This beautiful tree belongs to the Fabaceae family and holds a special place in Hindu mythology.
Hindu Mythology and the Legend of Kanikonna:
In Hindu mythology, there is a heartwarming tale about a poor boy who was a devout believer in Lord Krishna. This boy yearned to befriend the Lord and prayed earnestly for this wish. One day, while he was at the temple, his devotion touched Lord Krishna's heart, and in response, the Lord blessed the boy by placing a golden garland around his neck. However, the people around him misunderstood the situation, and accused the boy of theft, and he became deeply saddened. Overwhelmed by grief, he flung the golden garland onto a nearby tree.
This act of despair and innocence transformed the tree into the exquisite Golden Shower tree, known as Kanikonna in Malayalam. The Kanikonna is closely associated with Vishu, the Kerala festival celebrating agriculture and crops. During Vishu, it is a tradition to start the day with a beautiful ritual called "Kani Kanal," where Lord Krishna is venerated in the early morning hours.
